Ensemble of Four Towers

2024
Water-dilutable enamel on wall
4 x ca. 7m h. 12,5m
Location: Sansepolcro (AR), Italy
These murals are on two public housing buildings in Sansepolcro (AR) in Via dei Montefeltro, specifically on the four towers of the lift shafts that protrude from the buildings towards the beautiful central garden.
I wanted to create a dynamic representation with an alternation of two repeating motifs, similar but not the same, on the opposite towers according to a cross structure and an element, a drapery, that runs along the four towers.
On two of the towers, the drapery goes from the bottom left to the top right, forming an S that divides the sky (blue) from the earth (golden yellow); in the centre, the two colours are reversed, recalling the Tao, symbolising how everything changes and is remixed and that there are no absolutes (good and evil, right and wrong, ... ) so dear to today's information system that, instead, regularly avoids analysing the structural factors from which events originate. This is why I wanted to place at the centre of these towers/Tao the geometric structure underlying the famous painting ‘The Resurrection’ that Piero della Francesca painted for Sansepolcro and where we can still admire it today.
Each tower is a set of symbologies that deal with the cyclical nature of things, with awakening understood as becoming aware of one's own actions, and with events that are distant in time but intertwine, going from ‘The Resurrection’ to the story of how, during the Second World War some citizens tried to protect the priceless work with sandbags while British artillery captain Anthony Clarke went against the order to bomb Sansepolcro so as not to damage that fresco he had read so much about in an essay by Aldous Huxley where it was defined as ‘the most beautiful painting in the world’.
